No, you didn’t die and go to a Viking’s heaven. Good lord, that was an atrocious opening sentence. None the less, this bar is great. You won’t find TV’s here, I know what you are thinking, “Derek how can this be a great bar without any TVs”. Go there and trust me, I will not steer you wrong.
This smaller establishment gives off a cozy, european bar feel. Its large selection of international beers, bottles & tap, might have you trying a different beer every time you head to the bar. Wood surrounds you like the hull of a Viking battle ship and the picnic style seating will invite other groups to sit with you to meet new people. You might find the bar a tad heavy on your wallet, but its unique feel will warrant $7+ beers. It is good for smaller groups, who have something to talk about and actually enjoy each other, without TV to fill in awkward pauses.

Ps. It has really cool ceiling fans

The Irish Rogue:

42nd between 8th and 9th (closer to 9th)
(212) 445-0131

A popular hangout after work, especially Thursday and Friday nights. A large establishment with different areas, which all have a unique feel to them. During the warmer months, there is a small outdoor area in front, where you can interact with the passerby’s. I enjoy this area a lot and have spent several hours sitting there, enjoying what New York as to offer. You will gauruntee to strike up a conversation with someone here.

The next section is the bar and table area. You have the standard bar stools, high tables with bar stools and low tables usually used for dining. This is the heart of the Irish Rogue. Get one of the high tables, because the bar-staff can be a little crabby and short with you. The waitress are much nicer and always do a great job. TV’s surround you and showcase local and international sports and this is the area to watch it from.

Past this section you will see a small couch/lounge area with a fireplace. If you can get this area, you are in luck. A great laid back area where you can chill and talk with friends. Sometimes that area is used for live entertainment, usually acoustic guitar folksy style music, which really brings the old country feeling to you.

If all these areas are full, need not worry. There is an upstairs with a bar as well. This area can be rented out for parties or other events and maybe not be available at all times. There are couches and lounge chairs where groups of people can hangout without the hustle of the downstairs bar area. There is also a pool table and darts (bring your own darts, they rarely have them available).

There is a large variety of beers and good food too. They also have Strongbow on tap, this is a hard english cider, which most places don’t have. If you find there are too many people, try coming back at 11pm or later. The place usually clears out and you can choose where you want to sit.

9th ave and 53rd street – (212) 957-2994

A regular after work sports bar. Decent food and some good nightly specials (listed below). You will always have a good time here, especially when the game is on. Good wait staff and good atmosphere. If you bring 6+ people, you can just rearrange the tables and make your own larger table. They are flexible about things like that. If you don’t find something on the menu to your liking, go next door to Philly Slims and get a philly cheesesteak wit Wiz, some of the best in the city.
